Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
